How to Host a Halloween Party: A Murder Mystery Dinner Guide for 6–8 Guests
How to Host a Halloween Party: A Murder Mystery Dinner Guide

The easiest way to host a memorable Halloween party is to build it around one shared activity. A murder mystery dinner party gives every guest a character to play, a reason to dress up, and a story to follow from the first drink to the final accusation. Spectre at the Feast from WhoDunnit Dinners is a Halloween-themed murder mystery game for 6 or 8 players, available as a downloadable kit for £17.99.
Halloween falls on a Saturday this year (31 October 2026), so if you've been putting off planning, now is the time! Here's everything you need to host a Halloween party your friends will still be talking about at Christmas.
What makes a good Halloween party?
The best Halloween parties have four things:
- A theme guests can commit to. Costumes, food and decorations all point in the same direction.
- Something to do. Standing around with a drink is fine for twenty minutes. After that, people want a reason to talk to each other.
- Food and drink that fit the mood. Nothing fancy, just fun and a bit gruesome.
- A host who isn't exhausted! If you're stuck in the kitchen all night, you're not at your own party.
A murder mystery game ticks the second and fourth boxes at once. The game gives guests something to do, and because the script is written for you, you don't have to invent a plot or referee a free-for-all.
Why a murder mystery is perfect for Halloween
Murder mystery dinner parties work because they turn your guests into the entertainment. Everyone gets a character, a secret and a goal. There's no performing in front of strangers, no board game rules to learn, and no one left out.
For Halloween in particular, a mystery is a natural fit. Ghosts, vampires, witches and skeletons are already part of the season, so costumes are half-decided before anyone starts planning.
The WhoDunnit Dinners kits are built for easy hosting. Our games are designed for groups from 6 to 20, with fully scripted characters, and reviewers regularly mention the witty script and how simple the characters are to play. You download the game, print it, and you're ready to go.
Meet the game: Spectre at the Feast
Spectre at the Feast is a comedy murder mystery set at a Halloween party in Vill Spectre's lavish mansion in Doom Heights. The Council of Doom is celebrating another year of truly evil acts, until someone discovers that one of the board has done the unthinkable: a good deed. Wilf Wolf, manager of the Doom werewolf training facility, has been turned back into a human, and the guilty party must be found and banished from Doom.
It's a whodunnit in which the "crime" is being too nice, which makes it gloriously silly rather than gruesome. That tone makes it a good choice for mixed groups of friends, colleagues or family who want laughs rather than genuine horror.
Characters in the game include:
- Vill Spectre, a ghost, leader of the Council of Doom and a very rich property magnate
- Miss Cerrie Cat-Owner, a glamorous witch with a celebrity spell business
- Pussy, her black cat and business partner (who may be the one really in charge)
- Bony M Rickets, a distinguished skeleton who runs the library and keeps four centuries of records
- The Count, a vampire dentist
- The Countess, his vegetarian, scientist wife of four millennia
- Whizz Hard, a wizard rival who'd be working in a bank if he weren't magic
- The Grey Lady, a ghost who vastly overestimates how scary she is

How to plan your Halloween murder mystery party, step by step
1. Pick your date and guest list
Decide how many people are coming first, because that decides which version of the game you need. Spectre at the Feast is available for 6 or 8 players. If you're hosting with an odd number, ask a guest to double up or take the role of the host.
2. Email invitations as soon as you can
Murder mystery invitations are half the fun. Send them in character, for example a "summons from the Council of Doom", and let guests know the dress code. Ask them to arrive hungry and ready to lie.
3. Download and print the game
Because the game is a digital download, you can have everything printed and sorted well before the night. Characters can be handed out in advance so guests have time to put together a costume.
4. Choose a spooky menu
You don't need to cook a banquet. A simple, themed meal does the job, and the game works nicely alongside a dinner party structure. A few ideas that suit the characters:
- Blood-red punch or sangria for the Count, with a non-alcoholic version for anyone driving
- Root vegetable soup or roasted veg as a nod to the Countess's love of vegetables
- Bone-shaped breadsticks for Bony M Rickets
- Black-cat cupcakes with dark icing for Pussy
- Something sweet in orange and black for dessert
Check for dietary needs when guests reply, and keep a vegetarian option (which the Countess would approve of) Alternatively you can simply use the suggestions in our Host Notes. The booklet comes with the game and helps you to plan everything from what to wear to what to cook and the music and decor you might like to set the perfect scene. Speaking of which...
5. Set the scene with simple decorations
Dim the lights, use candles (or battery tea lights if you'd rather not risk it), add cobwebs, and put a few pumpkins around the dining table. You don't need a haunted house. A few touches around the room are enough when guests are in costume.
6. Be a relaxed host
The beauty of a scripted game is that you can sit down and play too. Hand out the character sheets, let everyone read their secrets, and enjoy the evening.
Halloween party costume tips for murder mystery guests
Costumes work best when they're easy. Suggest guests dress as their character, but keep it simple:
- Vill Spectre: a smart dark suit and a white sheet or ghostly accessory
- Miss Cerrie Cat-Owner: a witch's hat and something glamorous
- The Count and Countess: capes, fangs and a bit of drama
- Bony M Rickets: a skeleton top or face paint
- Whizz Hard: a wizard hat with a bank-style shirt and tie
Or let people go off-script. In a Halloween mystery, there are no wrong answers.
Frequently asked questions
What is a murder mystery dinner party?
A murder mystery dinner party is a game where each guest plays a character at a fictional event. Over the evening, guests question each other, share clues and try to work out who committed the "crime". It's usually combined with a meal, which is where the dinner comes in.
How many people do you need for a Halloween murder mystery?
It depends on the game. Spectre at the Feast is available for 6 or 8 players. WhoDunnit Dinners also offers games for groups of 4 to 14 players across the shop, so you can pick the right one for your guest list.
Do I need to be an actor to play?
No. The characters in WhoDunnit Dinners games are fully scripted and easy to play, and reviewers say they are well written but not too hard to characterise.
Is Spectre at the Feast scary?
It's a comedy, not a horror. The "crime" is a good deed, and the characters are all spooky creatures behaving badly. It's a good fit for people who like Halloween fun without the frights.
Can I get the game right away?
Yes. The downloadable version is a digital file you can print at home, so you don't need to wait for delivery.
Where can I buy Spectre at the Feast?
You can buy it directly from the WhoDunnit Dinners shop at www.whodunnitdinners.co.uk.
Ready to host?
If you want a Halloween party with a ready-made plot, funny characters and no awkward silences, Spectre at the Feast is a great place to start. Download it, print it, hand out the characters, and let the Council of Doom do the rest.
